Speak unto the Rock

Speak unto the Rock

At Horeb, Moses smote the rock and water came out of it.  That spiritual rock that followed them was Christ.  In Horeb, Moses striking the rock is a picture of Christ’s crucifixion and the water coming out is a picture of the Holy Spirit.

Moses got in trouble with the Lord because he did not provide the picture or lesson that the Lord wanted.  Here at Meribah, the Lord wanted Moses to speak to the rock.  Just as today we are to speak to the Rock, we ask in the name of Jesus and drink of the water of life freely.

The Lord has always been our Rock, an unchanging anchor in our changing world.  The Lord has blessed Jacob and all the children of faithful Abraham(us) giving them spiritual food to eat and a deeper understanding of the name (character) of the Lord.  David praised and thanked the Lord, he understood how his deliverance came about and gave all the glory to his Rock.

The house can be either a person’s life or it can be a church (congregation).  To build his house on the Rock the wise man had to dig down through the dust of the earth which is a picture of the works of Adam or men’s teachings.  When the wise man begins to build on his Rock, he first builds the foundation, the “first principles of Christ”.

In that early church, they pressed on to perfection(maturity), after first understanding the six doctrine of the foundation; repentance, faith, baptisms, laying on of hands, resurrections and eternal judgement.  Jesus is our Rock and we are His stones, built and framed together into a holy temple unto our God.

Exo 17:3-6 RV  And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore hast thou brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?  (4)  And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me.  (5)  And the LORD said unto Moses, Pass on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go.  (6)  Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

At Horeb, Moses smote the rock and water came out of it.

1Co 10:1-4 RV  For I would not, brethren, have you ignorant, how that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;  (2)  and were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;  (3)  and did all eat the same spiritual meat;  (4)  and did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of a spiritual rock that followed them: and the rock was Christ.

That spiritual rock that followed them was Christ.  In Horeb, Moses striking the rock is a picture of Christ’s crucifixion and the water coming out is a picture of the Holy Spirit.

Num 20:7-13 KJV  And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,  (8)  Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink.  (9)  And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as he commanded him.  (10)  And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock?  (11)  And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.  (12)  And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.  (13)  This is the water of Meribah; because the children of Israel strove with the LORD, and he was sanctified in them.

1Sa 2:2 RV  There is none holy as the LORD; for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God.

Deu 32:3-4 RV  For I will proclaim the name of the LORD: Ascribe ye greatness unto our God.  (4)  The Rock, his work is perfect; For all his ways are judgment: A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, Just and right is he.

The Lord has always been our Rock, an unchanging anchor in our ever changing world.

Deu 32:9-13 RV  For the LORD’S portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance.  (10)  He found him in a desert land, And in the waste howling wilderness; He compassed him about, he cared for him, He kept him as the apple of his eye:  (11)  As an eagle that stirreth up her nest, That fluttereth over her young, He spread abroad his wings, he took them, He bare them on his pinions:  (12)  The LORD alone did lead him, And there was no strange god with him.  (13)  He made him ride on the high places of the earth, And he did eat the increase of the field; And he made him to suck honey out of the rock, And oil out of the flinty rock;

The Lord has blessed Jacob and all the children of faithful Abraham(us) giving them spiritual food to eat and a deeper understanding of the name (character) of the Lord.

2Sa 22:1-4 RV  And David spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul:  (2)  and he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer, even mine;  (3)  The God of my rock, in him will I trust; my shield and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge; my saviour, thou savest me from violence.  (4)  I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.

David praised and thanked the Lord, he understood how his deliverance came about and gave all the glory to his Rock.

Psa 18:30-32 RV  As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the LORD is tried; he is a shield unto all them that trust in him.  (31)  For who is God, save the LORD? and who is a rock, beside our God?  (32)  The God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect.

Mat 7:24-27 RV  Every one therefore which heareth these words of mine, and doeth them, shall be likened unto a wise man, which built his house upon the rock:  (25)  and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon the rock.  (26)  And every one that heareth these words of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:  (27)  and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and smote upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall thereof.

The house can be either a person’s life or it can be a church (congregation).  To build his house on the Rock the wise man had to dig down through the dust of the earth which is a picture of the works of Adam or men’s teachings.  When the wise man begins to build on his Rock, he first builds the foundation, the “first principles of Christ”

Heb 6:1-3 RV  Wherefore let us cease to speak of the first principles of Christ, and press on unto perfection; not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,  (2)  of the teaching of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.  (3)  And this will we do, if God permit.

In that early church, they pressed on to perfection(maturity), after first understanding the six doctrine of the foundation; repentance, faith, baptisms, laying on of hands, resurrections and eternal judgement.

Eph 2:19-22 RV  So then ye are no more strangers and sojourners, but ye are fellow-citizens with the saints, and of the household of God,  (20)  being built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the chief corner stone;  (21)  in whom each several building, fitly framed together, groweth into a holy temple in the Lord;  (22)  in whom ye also are builded together for a habitation of God in the Spirit.

Jesus is our Rock and we are His stones, built and framed together into a holy temple unto our God.
